A play and study guide by Alan Gotlib * Music by Laura Silberberg

In Harmony is a complete package for classroom teachers.

Ms. Allegro is trying to put together an orchestra at her school. As if that isn't enough of a challenge, the instruments themselves are resisting. The Percussion don't want to play with the Brass who don't want to play with the Strings. To make matters worse, there's sabotage afoot. The problems of equity among the instruments mirror problems of equity within today's society.

In Harmony is a play in which musical instruments who don’t get along grow to realize how much better they can be when they all play together. Intended for an audience ranging in age from K to Grade 6, this innovative piece is written for a cast of 31, but can easily be performed by as few as 20 or as many as 50 students. The performance time is approximately 45 minutes. The play includes 8 songs and creatively sends the message to both participants in the play and audience members that we should value and celebrate the differences within our peer groups.

The teacher’s edition includes the complete script of the play, the complete musical score for the play, a variety of ways to use the play or portions of it to initiate classroom discussion of this issue, detailed suggestions of how to produce the play, a comprehensive bibliography of resources for anti-racism education and over 25 different activities related to anti-racism education including art projects, language projects and drama activities.

Also available are packages of 16 scripts and a CD with vocals and accompaniment.
